PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man is in custody after a high-speed incident that ended in a collision in Portland’s Lloyd District neighborhood.
Steven Paul Roll, 49, was stopped by TriMet’s Transit Police Division after he allegedly drove more than 120 miles per hour on Interstate 84 and fled a traffic stop late Thursday night, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said.
When TriMet police first stopped Roll, the officer noticed he had a lit marijuana pipe in the passenger seat that was still smoldering, according to court documents. Another pipe was also seen with a white, chalky substance in it.
The officer said Roll was holding a lighter, sweating heavily and his pupils were dilated.
When Roll learned he was under arrest for reckless driving, he turned on the car and drove off, MCSO said. Officers had deployed a tire deflation device, which released the air from his tire.
Moments later, Roll allegedly collided with another vehicle, also damaging a planter and a clock tower. He fled on foot, but officers were able to locate and arrest him, MCSO said.
This incident demonstrates how extreme speeding and reckless driving in an urban area can put innocent bystanders at great risk,” Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell said in a press release.
Transit officers said they later found two driver’s licenses inside Roll’s vehicle: One with a photo of him, but another with a different name, and another with a different name and the photo destroyed.
Roll is accused of two counts of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, first degree forgery, first degree possession of forged instrument, two counts of identity theft, driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, escape in the third degree, two counts of second degree criminal mischief, failure to perform duties of a driver, unlawful possession of methamphetamine and interfering with a peace officer. He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center.
